Under the general supervision of the Aquatic Coordinator. Serves as a Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA lifeguard
Attends orientation to YMCA mission and Program philosophy
· Promotes YMCA mission
· Mandatory to sit in the guard chair or stand at the edge of the pool at all times
· Attends staff meetings to insure open communication of all policy and procedure changes
· Enforce aquatic rules and procedures
· Wash deck, maintain cleanliness, and keep deck free of obstructions
· Start automatic cleaner when instructed by Aquatic Coordinator, and if needed use the net to skim pool surface or floor during your shift
· Maintain constant surveillance of water and deck area
· Lead and supervise classes as asked by the Aquatic Coordinator
· Dress appropriately for guarding duties (i.e. 1 piece red or black bathing suit, flip flops, red or black shorts, white or red t-shirt, whistle, and CPR mask)
· Knows all emergency procedures
· Fills out accident and turns them into the Aquatic Coordinator
· Prompt and on time for all classes (in building 5 minutes before shift)
· Responsible for getting substitute when not able to make shift
· Practices preventative lifeguarding principles at all times, enforces pool rules including no diving in water less then 9 feet deep
· Follows opening and closing procedure
· Reports problems or potential problem members or equipment to Aquatic Coordinator
· Willing to complete other duties assigned by Aquatic Coordinator when possible
Must hold current Red Cross or YMCA lifesaving certification
· A.R.C. CPR/PR, First Aid, and AED
· Water Safety Instructor is encouraged
· Normal tact and human relation skills
· Be able to maintain discipline effectively in the pool area at all times and to deal calmly and competently with issues.
